So normally, on Wednesday here at Grilling with Rich we would be talking about barbecue sauces and how sweet or spicy they are but since Thanksgiving is tomorrow there is one story that has caught my attention and I decided to write something about it.
It seems the folks from PETA want to temporarily change the name of a local town in Texas called “Turkey.” When I first heard of the story, I had to do some googling to even know where Turkey Texas is, I mean it is not even a huge city. Turkey Texas is a city in Hall County, Texas, United States with the population of 494 according to the 2000 census.
In response to this outrageous call from PETA’s Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman calling on Turkey, Texas to change its name to Tofurky, Texas, the co-founders of Pork Barrel BBQ, presented Pat Carson, the Mayor of Turkey, Texas with an interesting offer to temporarily change the town’s name to “Barbecue, Texas.” In addition, Pork Barrel BBQ then offered to donate over $1,000 immediately and $5 from every Picnic or Party Pack sold on their website from November 18th through December 9th in exchange for the town changing its name to “Barbecue, Texas” for 16 hours to be split evenly between three Turkey, Texas Charities:
1) Bob Wills Foundation (providing scholarships to local students)
2) Turkey Restoration Project (restoring Turkey, Texas school)
3) Turkey, Texas All Volunteer Ambulance and Fire Department
One of Pork Barrel’s Co-founders Bret Thompson said in an official press release about this matter: “It’s not that we have a beef with PETA,” said Thompson. “We like BBQ veggies as much as the next person. We’re just not sure the people of Texas are ready to embrace Tofu in the shape of a Turkey. We hope that folks will join us in pledging to support the people of Turkey, Texas via donations to these charities…” [By the way Grilling with Rich reached out to the folks at PETA and we got no response from them.] Then in the true spirit of Thanksgiving and giving back to those how might have less, the mayor of Turkey Texas challenged PETA that if they met or exceed Pork Barrel BBQ’s $1000 donation, Pork Barrel BBQ will change their name to ‘Tofurky Barrel BBQ’ for one day.
Fast forward to Grilling with Rich, and my thoughts on the subject.
Don’t get me wrong, I like veggies and I love grilling them! I also love treating animals ethically [hey I HAVE A DOG!!] but I truly believe that this has gone way to far! I mean come on! It’s a name of a town that existed before PETA was ever founded., in addition it is a small town in a really big state, [Turkey Texas was founded sometime in the 1890’s] truly there are more important and larger issues that PETA should be focusing on like stopping the practice of using Animals for science experimentation just to name a few!
We call on PETA to meet or even exceed Pork Barrel’s donation of $1,000.00 to local charitable organizations of Turkey Texas which is in the true spirit of Thanksgiving and giving back to others.
